How to Use a Manual Pallet Truck?

Jan 30,2026

In warehousing and logistics, supermarket stocking, and various factory workshops, manual pallet trucks have become one of the most indispensable logistics handling equipment due to their ease of operation, low cost, flexibility, and high efficiency.

Although this equipment seems simple to operate, proper use can significantly improve work efficiency, effectively extend the equipment's lifespan, and ensure the safety of operators.

I. Understanding the Core Structure of a Manual Pallet Truck

Before operation, we need to familiarize ourselves with its main components:

Handle (Operating Lever): Used to control lifting, lowering, and travel direction.

Control Handle (Three-position Switch): Usually has three positions: Up (down), Neutral (middle), and Down (lift).

Forks: The part that carries the pallet.

Hydraulic Pump: The core component that provides lifting power.

Wheelset: Includes steering wheels and load-bearing wheels.

II. Core Operating Steps

1. Inspection and Preparation
Before starting operation, please check the condition of the manual pallet truck:

Confirm that there are no oil leaks in the hydraulic pump.

Check that the wheels rotate smoothly and are free of obstructions.

Test the sensitivity of the three-position control switch.

2. Pallet Entry
Move the control handle to the lower position (topmost) to lower the forks to their lowest height. Push the pallet trolley, align it with the pallet's slots, and slowly insert the forks completely under the pallet. Ensure the pallet's center of gravity is centered on the forks to prevent uneven loading.

3. Lifting Goods
Move the control handle to the upper position (bottommost). Repeatedly crank the large handle up and down to raise the forks using the hydraulic pump until the pallet is completely off the ground (usually 3-5 cm off the ground is sufficient).

4. Moving and Carrying
Move the control handle back to the neutral position (middle position). In this position, the hydraulic pump will not activate when the handle is pulled, making moving the pallet the least strenuous and protecting the hydraulic system. When pulling the pallet trolley, try to use a "pull" motion rather than a "push" motion for a wider field of vision and more precise steering.

5. Unloading and Retreating
After reaching the destination, slowly raise the control handle back to the lower position. The forks will lower, and once the goods are securely on the ground, smoothly pull the pallet truck off the pallet.

III. Safety Precautions and Maintenance Recommendations

To ensure the efficient operation of the manual pallet truck, please remember the following:

Do Not Overload: Each machine has a rated load (e.g., 2 tons or 3 tons). Overloading will damage the hydraulic cylinders or deform the forks.

Road Requirements: Use the pallet truck on flat, hardened surfaces whenever possible. Avoid operating on slopes to prevent goods from tipping over.

Cargo Center of Gravity: Cargo should be evenly distributed on the forks. Never allow weight to be borne by a single fork tip.

Regular Lubrication: Regularly lubricate the axles and rotating parts to significantly reduce wear and make operation easier.

Mastering the operation of a manual pallet truck is a fundamental skill for every warehouse worker. Through standardized operation and regular maintenance, this "logistics marvel" will bring great convenience to your work.

If you are looking for high-quality manual pallet trucks or related logistics and warehousing equipment, it is recommended to choose reputable brands to ensure the durability of the hydraulic system and operational safety.
